How to Catch a Mermaid
An incredible teacher in Mesquite ISD, Melissa Garza, asked her friends and family to read and record a story for her first graders since school is closed because of the current social conditions.
When I teach a lesson through a book, I point out to the children the skills they will come upon. For example: singular/plural nouns, rhyming words, predicting an outcome, enrichment activities after the story and how to use real or representational objects from the story.
When children can discuss the characters, plot and setting and it becomes more real and personal to them, comprehension will follow in a natural and fun way.
